Chocolate, peanut butter cereal heaven made healthy! A vegan, gluten-free, grain-free version of your childhood breakfast staple. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely AMAZING with ice-cold milk!
Does anyone remember the good ol’ breakfast line in grade school? Everyone would head to the cafeteria before class to catch up with friends, swap homework answers (ha!), and take advantage of the FREE breakfast that the school gave out.
Even if you ate breakfast at home already, there was something fun about going to a communal space and enjoying a pre-class meal together. Especially with all the amazing cereal choices!
Don’t get me wrong…school breakfast was nothing fancy. Milk, juice, a few packaged pastries. But the best part by far was the WALL O’ CEREAL to choose from. There was something for everyone. Classic Rice Crispies, sweet Frosted Flakes, simple Cheerios. But the most popular? The variety that was ALWAYS gone first?
Reese’s Puffs.
The cereal that brings together the most amazing food/flavor combination of all time. Chocolate peanut butter deliciousness jam-packed into little round puffs of sweet, sugary bliss. Ahhh the memories!
Ok, ok. I know. Not the healthiest choice for breakfast. High in sugar, not made of complex carbs, and albeit not very filling either. But you have to admit…the cereal was pretty delicious! And you even got the extra treat of chocolate peanut butter flavored cereal milk to sip at the end! 😉
I’ve taken it remaking classic cereals into my own hands in the past (exhibit A), so figured Reese’s Puffs should be next on the list to tackle. I’m happy to report, this attempt (the first one actually!) came out better than expected.
Yes, these round orbs of goodness are bit different from their namesake…but still just as delicious and WAAAAAY more nourishing than the real thing! Check out the new and improved version…

- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Cook Time: 10 mins
- Total Time: 15 mins
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Category: Breakfast Foods
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup NuNaturals green banana flour
- 1/4 cup peanut flour
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1 flax egg (1 Tbsp flaxmeal + 3 Tbsp water)
- ¼ cup + 2 tbsp warm water
- 1 tbsp liquid sweetener
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 350 F.
- Combine flours, cocoa, and baking soda in a large bowl, then add water + flax egg. Mix well.
- Kneed batter into a dough.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and roll tiny balls (no larger than the size of a penny) and place on cookie sheet. Press each down to flatten.
- Bake for 10 minutes (watch closely as they can burn quickly due to their size).
- Let cool completely (cooling helps them “crisp up”).
Gluten-free, grain-free, vegan, and NO ADDED SUGAR! Now that’s a breakfast cereal you and your whole family can feel good about eating.
Perfect for a hearty, healthy breakfast before school or pack the puffs themselves in a baggy or container for munching on the go. I like them either way!
And remember how I mentioned that the original version was sort of like air? AKA not very satisfying. Well, my version is made with GREEN BANANA FLOUR! You’ve seen it used in my Savory Banana Flour Breakfast Bread, but I’ll remind you about what makes it a nutritional powerhouse.
Potassium – banana flour has 330mg per serving (1/4 cup)
All Natural –it’s all natural and FULL of vitamins and minerals…the brand I use is made from 100% all natural green bananas, no additives, preservatives, chemicals or dyes
Resistant Starch – banana flour contains RS2, an important form of resistant starch that is found in few foods…unlike normal starches (like high glycemic ones or simple ones) resistant starch is not digested in the small intestine, which results in numerous health benefits
Pretty great, right? Plus, you’re getting protein from the peanut flour and healthy fats from the flax, making these Healthy Copycat Reese’s Puffs an all around, wholesome, balanced breakfast option!
YAY for healthy cereals! If you’re a cereal killer like me, I know you’ll love and appreciate this epic recipe remake. 🙂
Did your school offer free breakfast when you were younger?
What’s your favorite cereal from childhood?
Be honest: did you drink the cereal left in the bowl after you finished your cereal? 😉

I never liked this cereal growing up but my dad loves it! He even added sugar to it, crazy sweet tooth he has. I should make this for him. My favorite cereal growing up was the unfrosted alphabets. I know, boring and flavorless , but i have always loved it.
WHAT!? No cereal!? Craziness!!! LOL
These look SO good! Going to make them soon for a work snack 🙂
You will LOVE!!
I’ve never baked with banana flour. Very interesting! The cereal looks really yummy!
Banana flour is AWESOME!!
My mom wouldn’t buy the sugary stuff except for occasionally Life cereal, and that one was a treat. What is the texture of these? Are they more cookie-like? Just curious. I’ve never used banana flour before. And, incidentally, I’m not vegan but find such interest in the lifestyle. One of my favorite YouTubers is Unnatural Vegan.
Crunchy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside! 🙂

Is ‘flax egg’ just flax and water?
Hi! I am not sure if coconut flour would work! You could try it! Yes that’s what a flax egg is!
