In honor of International Women’s Day, a post dedicated to the amazing women in my own life and how they’ve helped shape me into the person I am today.
Thanks to adidas for sponsoring this post.
I am a reflection of my community.
With International Women’s Day coming up later this month, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the women in my life who have helped me get to where I am today. Who have inspired me daily to be better. Who have supported me through the downs and cheered for me on the ups. These women are my WING WOMEN and I wanted to take the time to dedicate a post to them.
I am finally starting to see the path my life is going to take and doing a lot of reflecting on where I’ve. been vs. where I am now. All I can say is that I feel very grateful for the strong women in my life.
I’ve had so much love over the years through numerous triumphs and tribulations. Sometimes, I honestly feel undeserving of the amazing family and friends that I have.
Someone once said:
The circles of women around us weave invisible nets of love that carry us when we’re weak and sing with us when we’re strong.
And that quote perfectly encompasses the way I feel about the women in my own life.
They’ve held hope for me when I couldn’t hold it for myself, saw brighter days when I couldn’t yet see the light, and constantly believed in my potential to overcome the odds. I don’t think words can adequately convey how thankful I am to so many amazing people, but today I wanted to focus on a few special ladies in my life that have really made a difference.
As a woman myself, having the support and connection with other women, whether they’re family members or friends, is so important. They can relate to me, have gone through similar experiences, and know me better than anyone else.
The saying goes “no (wo)man can survive without community“…and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.
As humans we thrive on communication, connections, and being able to be vulnerable with others. Today I want to celebrate a few special ladies that I consider my ‘wing women’.
Sure you’ve heard of wing men…but to me wing women are even more important! Especially in my life.
To me a ‘wing woman’ is someone who swoops in to support me through difficult situations. She provides helpful life advice and insights. She gives me that outside perspective that we all need sometimes. She’s here for me in the fun times and in the trying times.
I truly believe every woman has a wing woman in her life, no matter if it’s her mother, sister, friend or a public figure. In fact, I’m lucky to have several of them. And I’d like to introduce you to them…
My Mom
Where do I even begin…I’ve called my mom an angel before and that title still fits. My mom is a guardian angel…mine especially. The way she’s sacrificed for my family my entire life is incredible. Her capacity to love, help, and care for others is indescribable. That’s probably what makes her such an amazing nurse!
Lucky for the rest of us, she’s a caretaker in EVERY aspect of her life. She puts others before herself any chance she gets and is always looking for ways to lend a helping hand, serve the community, and make other people’s lives just a little bit easier.
She’s always willing to take the burden off of others and to shoulder it herself even though she has her own obstacles to deal with. That’s just how incredibly strong and determined to serve she is.
Aside from her amazing giving qualities, my mom is also incredibly light-hearted and fun. She’s my best bud! I love all the time I spend with her and am so thankful that I’ve gotten some of the incredible aspects of her personality. She’s sweet, courageous, thoughtful, and exceedingly smart. My mom is always surprising me with new ideas I never knew she had.
I trust her more than anyone. I look to her more than anyone for advice. I am confident she would do ANYTHING for me at any time. Having that type of person in my life is invaluable.
My Sister
My sister, Melissa, is one of the most important people in my life. She’s always been an amazing role model and I was lucky to grow up with such a wonderful older sister to look up to. She’s always been very successful and achieves everything she sets out to do. I love seeing her thrive in new and challenging environments.
She’s kind, caring, sensitive, and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS willing to be there for me whenever I need support…even when I’ve struggled opening up in the past. Just the fact that I know she’s always there for means more to me than she could ever know.
I love seeing her be the wonderful mom that she is. I love that she’s sees the good in me and is able to look past my flaws. My sister is my kindred spirit. We have a bond deeper than either of us knows and I can’t wait to explore it more as we continue to grow and change.
Chosen Family
Chosen family…AKA friends I’ve grown so close to that I consider family. I hope everyone is able to have friends like this in the their life. As a teenager, I used to be concerned with being “friends” with a ton of people and being accepted by everyone. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that that’s not as important. Also, you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. So instead of focusing on quantity, I’ve learned to appreciate the quality of my friends. You only need a few close people to feel totally fulfilled in terms of friendship and I feel lucky to be in a place in my life where I have those deep, meaningful connections with strong-willed, fierce women.
My friends exemplify what it means to be a wing woman and they always have my best interest in mind even when I may not be able to see it myself.
They are encouraging and inspiring. They affirm my passions and life goals. I am so lucky to have them in my life and to know such beautiful, powerful souls.
To pull a quote from one of my favorite books (Into the Wild)…
“Happiness is only real when shared.”
These women bring me endless happiness and constantly go above and beyond what it means to be a wing woman.
I encourage you to celebrate the wing women in your life this International Women’s Day. Tell them what they mean to you, plan something special for them, or maybe gift them something…like a few new workout items from adidas!
