Healthy eating takes the right environment to cook food in! With these tips you can outfit your kitchen the healthy way and make it the prime place for preparing wholesome meals.

Healthy eating is certain kind of lifestyle. It takes more than just buying healthy foods or making plans to cook from scratch. You have to physically set up your environment to accomplish your wellness goals.
Just like with with any lifestyle choice, your mind and body need external cues to help guide you in the right direction. Whether it’s sleeping in your gym clothes to get to the gym in the morning or leaving your journal on your nightstand so that you remember to write each night, our environments make a big difference in our actions.
It only makes sense that the set-up of our kitchen could help or hinder our healthy eating habits. Today I’m sharing my 5 go-to tips for building a healthy & happy kitchen in your own home! 🙂
Pile on the produce
Having fresh fruits and vegetables in your house at all times makes you more likely to reach for those foods as snack and meal ingredients daily! Even if you don’t buy fresh, frozen veggies and canned options (no salt or sugar added) can be convenient and just as nutritious. Try and prep fruits and vegetables on the weekends for easy grab-n-g0 snacks and cooking ingredients all week long.
Organize the pantry
A neat and orderly pantry/fridge, where you can find everything easily and see exactly what you have, sets you up to cook healthy options. Put healthy ingredients front and center and at eye level so you are more likely to choose those foods to prepare. People act on visual cues…you have to SEE what you have in your pantry in order to use it! Better yet, keep unhealthy foods out of your cabinet all together (or for the most part). If you don’t buy junk, you can’t cook with junk! 🙂
Stock up on spices
Skip the pre-made dressings, marinades, and sauces! Stock your kitchen with fresh herbs and dried spices to flavor your food naturally and healthily. Spices and herbs have negligible calories, are full of vitamins and minerals, and add tons of taste to food that may otherwise taste bland on it’s own. Plus, herbs and spices are only made of exactly what they are from the earth! No ‘franken’ ingredients or weird additives in sight. Less salt and butter is needed when you have fresh, flavorful spices on hand!
Appreciate your appliances
Don’t hide your fancy kitchen equipment under the counters or in closets! Keep your juicer, crockpot, and other cooking gadgets where they can be seen and used frequently. You’ll actually MAKE that juice or slow-cooked chicken and veggie meal if you don’t have to dig thru cabinets to get out your appliances.
Cook with CLEAN water
Did you know that the tap water you’re probably cooking with is not as clean or safe to use as you’d think? That’s why I always use filtered water with the PUR® Advanced Faucet attachment on my sink nozzle. PUR is the only product certified to reduce over 70 contaminants, including 99 percent of lead, 96 percent of mercury and 92 percent of certain pesticides. Yup, all of that nasty stuff is in your COOKING WATER! I recently got mine and have been loving it. My fruits and veggies are cleaner upon washing, my meals more easily and efficiently (chlorinated water can affect cooking times and food color!), and my food tastes a whole lot better too. My food not only TASTES better but I really have peace of mind that I am not getting as many toxins or contaminants that regular tap water can harbor. I don’t think I could ever go back to cooking with unfiltered water after experiencing the benefits of the PUR® Advanced Faucet Filter.

Keep it clean and organized! Do dishes as often as you can, and a quick wipe down of the counter and oven each night. I find if I let my kitchen get messy, I (1) don’t want to clean, and (2), don’t want to cook, because it’s double the cleaning. | Priya
If you don’t know what an ingredient is on a box, you shouldn’t be buying it!!! | Katie
Don’t bring any pre-made desserts into the house. If you want a treat like cookies or brownies, make them yourself! They’ll be 10 times better for you using homemade ingredients. | Kaylin
One thing that helped me was taking out all the bad things that I shouldn’t be eating. Processed foods and stuff like that. If they are in your house they will tempt you. You can donate them instead of throwing them away too! | Kelly
Clean/cut any fresh fruits and vegetables at the start of the week and then keep them on the counter or at eye level in the fridge for a quick and easy snack. You’ll naturally eat more fruits and vegetables without even trying when they’re right there ready for you! | Kara
Leave healthy foods, like fruits and veggies out and in plain site. Anything that isn’t healthy, either don’t buy it or keep it where you can’t see it every time you enter the kitchen. | Nicole
Get rid of packaged foods with artificial ingredients. Also, keeping my refrigerator organized with all my fruits and veggies at an easy reach helps to make sure I’m eating those foods first! | Leah
Keeping things like roasted veggies, cooked quinoa, and canned legumes on hand makes throwing a delicious bowl together super easy! Top with some avocado and you have a healthy and delish meal. | Caroline
Prepping all of my grains and root veggies ahead of time so I can throw them into a warm breakfast bowl, on top of a salad- or make a quick stir fry! | Julie

I didn’t know almost all U.S. streams have at least one detectable pesticide. Crazy! Makes me sad that our water is so polluted. 🙁
Isn’t that CRAZY!!! So nuts. And pretty shocking/sad too!
These are all great tips! I buy lots of fruits and veggies, but I need to work on prepping them as soon as I get home from the store. My kids eat so much healthier when there are cut fruits and veggies in the refrigerator for snacking.
Thanks Tara! Glad you found these helpful!
We actually have a well which has been such a blessing, and we do have a whole house water filter! This looks like a really efficient beautiful filter. 🙂 Also, I LOVE to keep stocked with lots of different veggies and fruits. 🙂 And nut butters. 😀
Nut butters are a must. ALWAYS. LOL
I have been using a brita filter but would love to try one that hooks onto the faucet. It would make washing my vegetables so much easier!
Right?! That’s exactly what I have found too with my PUR filter!!
I love all of these tips! I actually just did a much needed pantry reorganization. My flours/grains shelf was a complete jumbled mess (of bob’s red mill bags mostly ha) but now it’s all stacked and sorted 🙂 And i totally agree on the appliance thing, I use the ones in sight the most of all!
I really need to take my own advice and organize my cabinet this weekend. I think it shall be my post-marathon project LOL! Need to do one thing at a time!
crazy how basically all our water sources have pesticides in them; pollution is definitely a HUGE problem and clean drinking water is limited! This is a great way to make sure your water at home is safe to drink!
Thanks Paige! Glad you agree!
All great advice. Thanks for including my tip!
Thanks Kara!!
Wow, this was so interesting and enlightening. I never knew what well our water came from or how our water is treated. Now I do and can be more proactive on how our water is processed.
Thanks for stopping by and reading! Glad you found it helpful!!
for me stocking up on wholesome ingredients helps me a lot..i used to have that filter too in my faucet but now i have swapped to an actual filter.
I love having filtered water so readily available!!
I have recently done a lot of changes to how and what I cook for our family…all for the better and healthier. Getting the kitchen organized was such a help. When I first started out it was such a pain to dig what I needed out of the cabinets. Now I know more of what I use often and have them accessible. It has made a HUGE difference in how fast I can cook and get out of the kitchen to spend more time with my family…who is why I started on this healthier eating trend for anyway. Thanks for sharing. (I would try for the giveaway, but we have fresh spring water and don’t need the filter. Good luck to everyone though.)
Thanks Catherine! Sounds like you’ve made a lot of positive changes in your home!
Great tips!
Thanks Genie!

Hi Kaila,
These sure are great tips especially having clean water. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!
Thank you Marla!
That’s a neat website. I learned – Chemicals used to clean water can actually create by-products that can become potentially harmful contaminants.
Thanks for the tips!
I thought that fact was interesting too!
Kaila, my kitchen looks like an appliance showroom! 😀 Much as I might like the *look* of clear countertops, my kitchen is not a showroom, it’s a working kitchen! So, yes, get those appliances out where you can and *will* use them; they’re not doing anybody any good tucked away and forgotten.
Sounds like my kitchen!! LOL
i learned that water pipes could be tens of years (or a century?!!) old, eeks!! i have a pitcher that i use but filtering the tap itsself would be so nice!!
Crazy right!?
Thank you for sharing your delicious recipe at the #RecipeSharingParty. I look forward to what you will share next week! We hope you’ll come back again next Thursday when we open our doors at 9:00 AM EST. Pinned, Yummed, Tweeted!
Thank you so much!!
Great points – produce is a big part of my family’s diet. So much so that I find I’m at the grocery store almost every day! I really appreciate all of the different insights from bloggers around the web.
Thanks Nicole! Glad you found this helpful!!!
Thanks for sharing great advice. I like the tip about not buying pre-made treats and just making them yourself – that’s what I usually do because then I can adjust the level of sweetness.
We have a reverse osmosis filter with a separate faucet in our kitchen for drinking but oddly I’ve used tap water for cooking. I guess I should be using the filtered water!
Thanks for reading!! Glad you found this helpful!
These are all great tips and I’d love to win that faucet mount! Thanks so much for joining us at Share The Wealth Sunday!
Thanks Lisa! Good luck!!
Great tips! I’ve made changes over the years slowly and now make almost everything from scratch. It actually surprises me when I’m at someone else’s house and they have store-bought salad dressing. I forget it even exists. Homemade is much healthier and it really tastes better too!
Thanks so much Grace!!
Organizing the pantry is key!! Thanks for linking up today

Me reading through the list: “Hmm I should probably try to do at least ONE of these” bad Cay..hahah especially the produce piling. That’s something I’m actively trying to improve
You got this girl! Small changes make a big difference!
Kaila, we love shopping at Aldi’s, they carry food with no GMOs and so I feel good about stocking up on the fresh foods, fruits and veggies. I have looked at other water purifiers but never dove in. I will definitely be looking at Pur. Thanks for the opportunity to win one!
Love Aldi!

I agree that keeping a good supply of spices is essential but I’d throw in there a good supply of vinegars and healthy oils. I use vinegar all the time to add flavour to my dishes and my favourite at the moment is to add a splash of balsamic when sautéeing kale. It caramelises it just a bit and makes it delicious.
True!! That’s definitely a great addition to the list!!
