Soft, whole grain scones flavored with a delicious combo of fresh orange and chocolate! A treat healthy enough for breakfast and sweet enough to satisfy your dessert cravings. Vegan, gluten-free, and fruit-sweetened!
It’s National Baking Month so I thought it would be fun to try making something that I’ve never had success with in the past. Any guesses?
If you said SCONES, you’d be correct.
The Beginning of My Scone LOVE
Ever since working at Panera Bread in high school, I’ve been wanting to make a homemade version of their amazing scones. Their orange scones were always my favorite and it was always exciting when there were some left at the end of my shift to take home.
I’ve tried making homemade scones in the past, but they never turned out exactly as I’d hoped. Maybe it was because I tried to check too many boxes with my recipes. Healthy. Vegan., Gluten-free. Naturally sweetened. I was definitely trying to do too much at once. And sometimes it’s good to just stay true to a classic recipe instead of making a TON of modifications.
Unexpected Inspiration
Luckily, I came across a fun scone recipe (in People magazine of all places!) that seemed easy and basic enough to make a few changes to in order to make it my own. Bonus? It happened to be for Chocolate Orange Scones! If there’s one thing I love more than orange flavored things, it’s orange and chocolate TOGETHER.
A Classic Gone HEALTHY
So with a traditional scone recipe to use as inspiration, I made a few changes and swaps to make it more “Healthy Helper approved“. ?
I planned on making it dairy-free, but without even meaning to the final result ended up being vegan AND gluten-free. I guess all I needed was a good base recipe to work off of to make my scone attempt FINALLY work.
And by work, I mean these babies were 10 out of 10 delicious!
Healthy Chocolate Orange Scones
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Cook Time: 35 mins
- Total Time: 50 mins
- Yield: 9 scones 1x
- Category: Sweet Snacks
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups gluten-free oat flour
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup date sugar (depending on how sweet you like baked goods)
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- heaping 1/3 cup mini vegan chocolate chips
- ½ cup cold vegan butter
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- ¼ cup vegan Greek-style yogurt
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar, optional
Instructions
- Stir together flour, date sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry cutter or two knives. It should resemble coarse cornmeal when fully combined.
- Whisk together orange juice and vegan yogurt in a small bowl. Stir juice mixture into flour mixture, slowly adding until dough just begins to come together. Fold in chocolate chips. Chill dough mixture for 1 hour.
- Lightly coat a 9 inch cast iron skillet with cooking spray and press dough into skillet so that it fills completely. Cut it into 9 slices.
- Preheat oven to 350º. Sprinkle scones with coconut sugar, if desired and bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
Sweet AND Wholesome
Whole grain, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, these Chocolate Orange Scones are just sweet enough to be served as dessert but also full of enough healthy ingredients to pass for breakfast or a tasty addition to your weekend brunch spread.
Homemade baked goods are one of my favorite foodie pleasures! There’s nothing like baking something from scratch, filling the kitchen with amazing aromas, and then digging into the goods straight from the oven! I’ll definitely be celebrating National Baking Month for as long as I can. ?
