A healthy version of the classic Starbucks dessert! Half vanilla, half chocolate, all delicious. Gluten-free, vegan, and no added sugar.
A lot of my recipes are inspired by childhood favorites, special moments in my life, or random “food memories” that pop up every now and again. Recently, a memory came to me that I still cherish to this day. It doesn’t have to do with cooking exactly but it certainly has to do with eating, fun food, and sharing a special moment with my mom.
You see, when I was little for a treat we would go to Starbucks together for one of their famous Black & White Cookies. I don’t even think they sell these anymore (which is sad!), but I can remember the taste and texture so distinctly.
A Childhood Food Memory
My mom and I would settle into a booth, her with a warm caramel macchiato and me with a hot chocolate. We’d place the cookie on top of the bag that it came in and she’d let me break it in half so that we each got some of the black and the white part. I was never able to break them evenly and she ALWAYS let me have the bigger half. What are moms for, right? 😉
She’d sip, I’d sip. We’d chat. We’d each break off bits of the soft, cakey cookie topped with the most delicious vanilla or chocolate icing.
Now don’t get the wrong impression. These cookies weren’t gourmet. They probably were made en masse somewhere and shipped in to the individual Starbucks locations. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t delicious and very enjoyable! And more than that, they represented time together. Just some fun girls’ time between my mom and I for us to chat after school or on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
These cookies meant more than just a sweet treat. They symbolized a bond between my mom and I that we’ve always shared…our love of togetherness AND our love of food! Because that’s one of the little acknowledged powers of food. Sure it’s delicious, nourishing, and pleasurable…but it’s also a means for connection.
My mom instilled a love for food and cooking in me from a young age and obviously it’s stuck until today! We were so bummed when Starbucks stopped selling the cookies, but by then we had already established a wonderful tradition of bonding over food and culinary adventures.
