I LOVE family holiday parties. There’s nothing more fun to me than gathering with my immediate and extended family to catch up, share food, and create lasting memories around the holidays. Luckily, both my mom and dad have a lot of siblings, so out parties are always packed with people, LOUD, and super fun.
One issue that comes up every year is deciding what kind of dish to contribute to the meal. We usually eat buffet style and I always try to bring something new each time. My family members aren’t really picky eaters, but there are a few with food allergies and that are following special diets. So as the resident foodie, I try to make a dish that everyone can enjoy no matter what their dietary needs are. This usually ends up being a vegan or vegetarian and gluten-free dish (with no nuts…because my one cousin is deathly allergic!).
After checking out my fridge and pantry for some inspiration, I found I had a block of extra-firm tofu AND an extra bottle of my favorite my favorite cooking wine…Holland House White Cooking Wine.
The reason why I LOVE Holland House White Cooking Wine is that it imparts a slightly dry, but distinct, wine flavor perfect for bringing out bold flavors in chicken, seafood, and taste-tempting sauces. And a sauce is exactly what I decided to use it for in my holiday recipe. They also have several other amazing varieties like Marsala (sharing my chicken marsala recipe soon!), Sherry, Red, and White with Lemon Cooking Wines. The wines are great for sauces AND high heat cooking because they maintain their flavor no matter how they are incorporated into a dish.
With the tofu and cooking wine on hand, I thought it would be a delicious idea to make a baked tofu dish with a delicious, tangy white wine based sauce. I decided to cut the tofu into small cubes so that people could take as little or as much as they wanted at the party. Sticking toothpicks in each cube would be a fun serving method as well!
I used my go-to “perfect” baked tofu method (you’ll learn that below!) and created the most creamy, flavorful sauce with a simple mixture of:
Holland House White Cooking Wine
Dijon mustard
Honey
Olive Oil
Dill
and salt and pepper, to taste!
The whole dish took less than 30 minutes to make and turned out great. Yes…I always taste test a new recipe and make it a few times before I bring it to a family party or gathering. Just in case! ?
PrintBaked Tofu with White Cooking Wine, Dill and Mustard Sauce
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Cook Time: 25 mins
- Total Time: 35 mins
- Yield: 3-4 servings 1x
- Category: Main Meals
Ingredients
- Baked Tofu:
- 1 block of extra firm tofu, cut into 1 inch cubes and pressed overnight (see note)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- Sauce:
- ¼ cup Holland House White Cooking Wine
- 3 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp honey (or vegan alternative)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill or 1 tsp dried dill
- 1 tsp cornstarch
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425. Place cubed tofu in a large bowl. Add cornstarch, salt and pepper, and lightly drizzle with olive oil. Gently mix with your hands until the tofu is evenly coated. Place tofu on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes or until outsides are golden brown and crispy.
- While tofu is cooking, mix together all sauce ingredient except cornstarch. Place sauce mixture into a small pot and heat on high until the sauce begins to boil. Once boiling, add cornstarch, reduce heat to low, and stir until fully combined. Allow sauce to thicken a bit (about 2 mins).
- When tofu is done, remove it from the oven and pour the sauce on top or serve it on the side to dip the tofu cubes.
Notes
Press tofu by laying a paper towel on a plate and putting the tofu cubes on top. Place another layer of paper towels on top of the tofu cubes and place another plate on top to add extra weight. Allow tofu to press overnight in the refrigerator.
This one turned out to be a true winner! And it makes for a great meatless dinner or meal prep item if you don’t end up making it for the holidays.
Vegan, gluten-free, low-fat, and absolutely filled with FLAVOR…this recipe will definitely be your new favorite way to prepare tofu. All thanks to Holland House, of course! ?
