Going without access to the gym or fitness studios can be tough for people that love exercising or crave movement in their day for mental and physical wellbeing.
Since we’re all in the same boat right now in terms of access to fitness facilities, we’ve all had to embrace working out at home. This can be a hard mindset to get into because often times the gym is an escape for us. It’s challenging to now be eating, working, relaxing, AND working out from our homes. But this is all temporary and we just have to do the best we can right now.
Now’s not the time for crazy fitness goals. Just make it a priority to move your body for the mental and physical health benefits. It’s more about maintenance (talked about that here) and doing what we can with what we have available.
With all of that said, there ARE some ways to make working out at home more fun…or at least more tolerable. 😉
Here are some of the ways I’ve been making at-home fitness more fun!
Embrace Play
Getting outside is SO important for me and I also think it makes working out without gym access much more bearable. I’ve been embracing my inner child by PLAYING GAMES! I recently bought a frisbee, have been utilizing my hula-hooping skills, playing cornhole at my parents house, and playing catch with my dad (shoutout 12 years or competitive softball growing up).

“Playing” like you used to as a kid is an easy way to get movement in your day without it feeling like a structured, planned out “workout”.
Build a Home Gym
You don’t need a ton of equipment at home to get a good workout in. Actually your body weight is sufficient most of the time! But if you’re looking to add a few things to your home workout routine, here’s a few things I suggest…
- a heavy kettlebell (I have a 20lb)
- a lighter set of dumbbells for accessory work (10-12lbs)
- a heavier set of dumbbells (15-20lbs)
- a thick exercise mat or yoga mat
- optional: a compact elliptical for rainy days (something I just invested in)
Learn a New Skill
Whether it’s nailing that yoga pose you’ve been struggling with, taking up juggling, or like me, trying to perfect the latest TikTok dance, going all in with learning a new skills can be a secret way to stay active and on the move.
I’ve really been loving TikTok actually (Follow me @KailaProulx)! It’s fun, gets my creative juices flowing, and trying to learn a dance for an hour when you’re pretty uncoordinated is quite a workout. 😉

Use Your Body
As I said above, equipment is TOTALLY unnecessary for a good workout at home. Especially since this is a tough time financially for many people right now, body weight workouts can be effective and FREE. There are tons of free workouts on YouTube, Pinterest, and even here on my own site.
Here’s a home workout that I created recently! It can be done with or without weights…
Additionally, this is the PERFECT time to embrace walking, hiking, or running…3 of my favorite activities. The weather is getting nicer and time outside has benefits in itself, so being active outside is a great way to maintain overall wellbeing.
Hopefully these tips will reinvigorate your excitement about working out at home!
