Time for another Top Five post! And this one is featuring one of my all time favorite things…SNACKS. I am the snack queen. I like ’em big (we’re talking meal sized), yummy, and frequent. I snack at least 3 times a day and my snack plates are known to be bigger than some people’s meals!
Unfortunately, a busy college lifestyle with work and appointments sandwiched in between does not always allow enough time for me to prepare one of my epic snack plates (those are usually reserved for at night). I often find myself having to pack snacks for on the go munching, for in class, or when I’m not serving customers at work. I need healthy, delicious foods that are portable and just as satisfying as my bigger snacks. So today I am sharing my Top Five On the Go Snacks. These are the foods and products I reach for in a pinch and they do a great job of getting me to my next meal!
1. Homemade protein baked goods
I always have muffins, scuffins, and a plethora of cookies in my freezer at home. I pop ’em in a plastic bag and by the time I’m ready to eat them, they’re thawed and ready to eat! I love baking with protein because I find that the baked goods have much more staying power and fill me up much more quickly than a traditional baked good with mostly just carbs. Some of my favorites include…
Chocolate Coconut Protein Granola
and easy protein muffins made from mixing FlapJacked Pancakes mix and water!
2. Healthy snack mixes
I’ve never been a huge trail mix person, but when I discovered there were other types of snack mixes out there, I fell in love. Especially with crunchy ones! (We’ve discussed the benefits of eating crunchy foods before!) I am a big fan of Crunchies Freeze Dried Roasted Veggies, Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame (salty deliciousness), Simply Protein Crunch (this stuff is EPIC.), and my own homemade Exotic Edamame Trail Mix. You get a mix of flavors and textures that keeps you from getting bored while you’re snacking and lots of different nutrients to keep you full!
3. Whole food bars
You know I am a self proclaimed BAR ADDICT, and my bar stash is always stocked with my favorites. Larabars, Thunderbird bars, Kronobars, Fiber D’Lish bars, Kit’s Organic Bars, and Simply Protein bars are always in my house. Simply Protein are especially great for snacks on their own because they are super high in protein, have only 1 gram of sugar (so no blood sugar spikes!), and they taste like rice crispy treats. Let’s be serious, taste is a major factor in satisfaction!
4. Nuts
I eat at least one serving of nuts everyday and just like those snack mixes I mentioned, I love to CRUNCH on them! Raw nuts are my go to and my favorites include pistachios, cashews, pumpkin seeds, jungle peanuts, and cashews. I don’t discriminate…I’m a nut for nuts.
5. Crackers and cheese
A classic, right? I am big fan of a good ‘ol cheese stick with some crackers or flatbreads. Good mix of carbs and protein and it feels a little more like a real meal instead of just having a packaged food. My favorite type of cheese stick is smoked mozzarella and I like pairing that with whole grain crackers like Wasas, Finn Crisps, or Whole Wheat Matzoh! I may be the only non-jew that actually likes matzoh. 🙂
All these foods work great for me in terms of holding me over and satisfying my desire to snack. Sometimes I crave sweet and sometimes I crave savory, just depends on the day. But this list meets all my needs and allows me a pretty wide variety of options to pack with me for school or work!
As I mentioned above, I am a big fan of Simply Protein products. You see them featured all the time in my instagram posts and I’ve loved watching them grow and expand over the past few years. In fact, soon they are a releasing a whole new line of digestive friendly bars! Some of my favorite products from their current line include:
- Maple Pecan, Cinnamon Pecan, Chocolate Caramel, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Simply Protein bars
- Cherry Almond Simply Fruit and Nut bars
- Banana Butterscotch Simply Whey bars
- Banana Caramel and Lemon Cranberry Pumpkin Seed Simply Protein Crunch

I pick up a few different protein bars at the store then keep them in my purse, gym bag, and car for those times when I need a snack asap. Hanger, the struggle is real;-)
