Did you know June is National Fruits and Vegetables Month? It is the perfect time to eat more fruits and vegetables, especially fresh avocados since they play such an important role in achieving a healthy diet. I love avocados and right now they are at the peak of perfection at local stores.
Personally, I think fruits and vegetables should be celebrated EVERY month…don’t you? But at least a national food holiday month gives us an excuse to get extra excited about getting in some micronutrients!
As I mentioned above, avocados are BOMB when it come to providing you with good nutrients. Avocados contain naturally good monounsaturated fat and are cholesterol free. Naturally good fats are so important for a healthy diet.
Also avocados, which are fruit although most people think of them as a vegetable, contain less than 1 gram of sugar per ounce, the least amount of sugar per serving of any other fresh fruit! Not that I am watching my sugar intake, but it’s pretty cool that a fruit like avocados can be used in either sweet OR savory recipes given its mild flavor and creamy texture.
Today’s recipe highlights those key characteristics of the good ol’ Hass Avocado (my favorite kind!). Creamy, buttery, and so wonderful to enjoy during the summertime! I swear, avocados are EVERY WHERE right now! In salsas, in flatbreads, in GUAC (of course!). I’ve even seen avocado fries and avocados in savory oatmeal! Hey, if you like avocado, you can truly eat with ANYTHING. I know a lot of people also make baked goods with it or sweet treats!
But today we’re going the savory route. I’m sharing a recipe that plays on the creamy amazingness of avocados…a sauce so decadent and smooth that you’d never guess it was RAW and VEGAN.
My Tomato Avocado Pasta Sauce is the perfect topping for your favorite pasta or even as a coating for your favorite protein! It can be served cold (keeping it raw) or warm, and tastes so fresh and light.
Creamy Tomato Avocado Pasta Sauce
- Prep Time: 10 mins
- Total Time: 10 mins
- Yield: 4 servings 1x
- Category: Main Meals
Ingredients
- 1/2 small sweet onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ tsp red chili flakes
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 28 oz canned tomato puree (no salt added, if possible)
- 3⁄4 teaspoon sea salt, fine
- 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
- 2 Hass avocados, ripe, peeled, and chopped
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a food processor and puree until smooth. Serve cold or place sauce mixture in a pot and heat on the stove over medium heat. Once sauce is heated through, serve over your favorite pasta!
Forget heavy, cream sauces…you don’t need dairy to make a sauce rich tasting and satisfying! This Tomato Avocado Sauce proves that 100%.
I served mine over whole-wheat bow ties (aren’t bow ties just the most fun pasta shape!?), but it would be equally delicious over gluten-free pasta or even ZOODLES!
Usually you don’t think of pasta as a summertime dish, but this one definitely is. It’s light, flavorful, and has so many potential uses. I even like using it as a dip since it’s thick and creamy. Tomatoes and avocados pair so well together. Two staples of summer combine to make one amazingly crave-worthy pasta sauce!
So next time you have some Hass avocados ripening on the counter…forget the guac! Go for sauce instead! I promise this will be a new favorite of you and you family. A great way to sneak in fruits AND veggies in one meal, too!

This sauce, I will surely try. I’t will make the sauce even healthier and yet it didn’t turn out to be green. So it still looks palatable.
Awesome!! I hope you love it!
