Two weeks ago I brought you all some tips that I use to keep my workouts carefree. Well, as a part two of the #CarefreeChallenge that I am apart of, today I wanted to discuss some tips to embrace a new day!
Let’s face it, sometimes you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed…literally and figuratively. But that doesn’t mean your whole day has to be ruined! Attitude is everything and I have some great suggestions for how to turn your mood around when the last thing you want to do is get up and take on the day!
Go to bed at a reasonable time
We all know the importance of getting a good night’s rest, so I won’t go on about all the benefits. Just do it. Stick to a schedule, get to bed at a reasonable time, and get what you need to get done during the day so you can relax and unwind at night. There is nothing better than waking up refreshed and rejuvenated.
Drink a full glass of water first thing
This wakes your whole system up and refreshes you after a long night of sleep. Your body craves fluids in the morning and it’s a great way to get a jumpstart on your water intake for the day.
Take 5 slow deep breaths
This is especially helpful if you wake of anxious or with a racing mind. Deep breathing calms the mind and body and will help recenter you.
Set an intention for the day
Make a goal, come up with a mantra that goes along with it, and make it your mission to accomplish it during the day. It doesn’t have to be a physical action or chore, but it can be something about your attitude for the day, your mindfulness, or how you plan to approach whatever comes your way.
Eat breakfast
It’s the most important meal of the day for many reasons….not limited to the fact that it jumpstarts your metabolism and wakes your whole body up! But to me eating breakfast has mental benefits too! I love ‘breaking the fast’ and giving myself some nourishment after a long night of sleep. And I look forward to eating some of my favorite foods! If you’re not a breakfast eater, start small and just try to incorporate SOMETHING into your morning. I promise you’ll feel better in terms of energy and mood and will stave off that slump you would normally get mid-morning.
Make yourself look presentable
When you look good, you feel good! It’s not about getting dressed to the nines and going all out for every occasion, but making yourself look like a reflection of the awesome person you are on the inside will do a lot for your confidence and other people’s perception of you. Make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you’re wearing and allow your look to a be an expression of your creativity, style, and mood!
Look in the mirror and tell yourself out loud one thing you like about yourself
Too often we forget to give ourselves some self love. It can be hard, especially in our society where negative self talk runs rampant. Even if you don’t necessarily feel that great about yourself or how you look, make it a point to find SOMETHING that you can feel good about. And say it OUT LOUD! The more you reinforce these positive thoughts the easier it will be to actually take them in and start to feel them inside of you.
Write down one thing you’re grateful for
There is so much in our everyday lives to be grateful for. Sometimes we forget how fortunate we truly are. Take a moment each morning to write down one thing you’re thankful for and stick it in a mason jar. At the end of the year you can look back on all your slips of paper and be reminded of just how lucky you are. There really is more good in your life than bad.
Get a jump start on your to-do list for the day
In the morning, you have the least obligations and the day is fresh. Start it off right by tackling as much of your to-do list as you can. As the day goes on, the list will be added to, so getting what you can done in the morning will save you later on and allow for sometime to relax in the evening.
Check in with your loved ones and tell them you love them
Not to be morbid, but you never know what could happen. Just like they say to never go to bed angry, try not to wake up angry and forget to tell your loved ones how important they are to you. They’ll appreciate feeling loved and cared for, and you’ll feel good for knowing you’ve started the day on good terms.
Watch the news and get clued in on current events
It’s good to stay update and in the know with what’s going on in the world! It makes you a more well-rounded person, allows you to be involved in conversation, and may even help you take the focus off of some of the issues in your own life.
Put on a smile and embrace carpe diem!
The saying goes that you’re never fully dressed without a smile…and I believe that! A smile changes more than just the look on your face. Studies have shown that smiling, even if it’s fake, can make you happier and lighten your mood. Plus, everyone will appreciate your attempt to be cheerful and greet the day with a positive attitude. Leave your house with a plan to run the day, don’t let it run you.

Todays’s Healthy Help: Covered someone’s drink at work!
Never too early to start Lending a {Healthy} Hand for this week’s round-up! Tell me what you’ve done to help someone else lately!
I like to read through motivational quotes or listen to feel good music to improve my mood sometimes and get me pumped for the day or an event. 🙂 One of my favorite quotes by Roald Dahl: “If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
Wow! I love that quote!!
Thank you, great blog today <3 I hope you are well with everything in balance!
I do nearly all of them daily! Whoot, do I get extra points for getting a head start? 🙂
Yes definitely!! 1000 points!!
AHHHH at 45 Im just so so glad to wake up each day.
Definitely something to be thankful for!!
Is it horrible that I need to embrace almost every single thing you wrote here? Sure, I do a few and I do some here and there but overall, I need an overhaul to my mornings and definitely my sleep schedule. Thank you for the great post. I need to adopt some of your tips to ensure that each day is the best it is able to be.
Thank you!! I’m glad this list could give you some good inspiration!
Thanks heather! We’re all a work in progress.
Thanks for these great tips! I try to get to bed at a reasonable time, but often I have still have hundred other things to do and so I it is almost midnight by the time I get to bed.
I struggle with that too! I always feel like I have to cross everything off my to do list!
Awesome inspiration!
First thing I do is drink water and then coffee and then workout – if I don’t workout, I cannot guarantee I will be a happy camper! 🙂
Me too! Working out definitely sets me up for a great day!
What great suggestions!! Some great new ideas to incorporate, thanks!!
No problem!! Enjoy!
I commented above from my phone, and for some reason it auto corrected my name. lol
Love these tips – i used to drink a full glass of water in the morning and it definitely helped me feel better. It’s such a small thing that I had forgotten all about! Right now I need to work on going to bed earlier… Thanks for the tips!
Same here! Especially with the semester starting back up! Gotta get good sleep!
Love these so much! Going to bed at a reasonable time is my biggest challenge. I’m a bit of a night owl and tv binger. Sigh.
I agree! Gotta catch all my shows lol!
I’m so horrible about going to sleep at any sort of decent hour – especially if I have any sort of deadline to meet. I love the idea of writing down one thing you’re grateful for each day – so often it’s easy to forget all the things we have when we’re focused on the one stress that’s making our day cruddy! Thanks so much for this post – and reminders!!
No problem Gigi! Glad you liked it!!
So guilty of not doing many of these. Great tips
Thank you!!
I love this post. i think these are great tips. I’m actually going to drink a glass of water in the morning when I get up. haha. This might make me feel better during the day. i hope your having a great Tuesday!
Thanks Leslie!! Hope your day is great too!
Awesome tips! I think these are great tips “Watch the news and get clued in on current events”
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Diana!!
Love all your tips! I know I need to focus more on getting to bed at a reasonable time! I always start my day with prayer the moment my feet hits the floor and next I’m off to grab that glass of water and my coffee next.
What a positive way to start the day!!
I love our tips, they’re super Zen 🙂 I need to work on getting to bed at a reasonable time, been bad at it for so long.
Same here!! It’s something I’m trying to get better at this month!
There was such a great spiritual aura about this post. I had to re-read it twice because it seems like you were speaking directly to me. Sometimes Spirit sends you messages or you find messages in the stranges places. I needed to see in writing about checking in with loved ones. I’m not too good with calling and texting my siblings as I should be. I just found out one of them was ill, none of my other siblings told me because they thought I’d already knew! Now i’m sending out group texts just to keep up with everyone.
Wow thank you so much Lily! I’m glad this post was able to reach you in scuba profound way!
My embracing usually starts with some coffee, a little meditation and a brisk half-mile walk to the subway. City living!
I always stay up to date with the news and current events. It helps keep you fresh and safe.
Gratitude in the morning is such a good one. I started doing that after I first watched The Secret.
I’ve got everything managed but the going to sleep at a decent time. No matter what I always go to bed way too late and wake up way too early.
Great! I like to stay positive and also remember gratitude!
Grab coffee! Then pack the kids’ lunches 🙂 I l have noticed when I get dressed- nothing fancy, just cute casual, I feel so much better than when I just throw on some workout clothes.
Excellent tips and much needed ones this morning! Tea or coffee is usually the first thing I grab to drink in the morning, but more and more I’ve been seeing this tip about drinking water first thing in the morning instead. I’m so glad you included it and reminded me – going to start giving it a try. Thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions. So glad I found your post via the SITS sharefest today. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Marcia!!
These are all really great ideas! I have to remember to drink a big glass of water when I wake up. So many times I don’t get ANYTHING until a few hours go by.
Oh I would pass out if I didn’t drink something first thing and then shortly follow that with breakfast!
[…] Tips for Embracing a New Day […]
I love the idea of setting an intention or mantra for the day. Sometimes I feel like there are so many little things I want to improve on that it’s just too overwhelming, but doing one thing more positively is much more manageable. Tomorrow I’m going to focus on being kind!
I love that intention! I’m sure you’ll succeed!
