A savory spin on a classic snack! This cheesy, salty Southwestern Granola is crunchy and satisfying. It’s high protein, naturally gluten-free, and low in fat. Perfect for munching on the go and changing things up from your usual snack options.
Savory versus sweet. It’s a long time argument that’s been waged in the world of foodies. Where do you stand?
If you were to ask me, I honestly couldn’t give you a straight answer on which flavor profile I prefer more! It really depends on the day…heck, even the TIME of day! Sometimes I am in the mood for ALL things sweet. Give me cake, cookies, and brownies by the plate full! Other times all I want is savory snack! Salty, umami filled flavors that satisfy.
Today I am indulging that savory side of my taste buds and bringing you a recipe for something that isn’t traditionally a savory item…granola!
I’ve done savory bars, savory baked oatmeal…even savory CUPCAKES. But never granola! Inspired by that package of spices I received last week, I decided to mix things up a bit.
I was in need of another batch of homemade granola (I always like to keep some on hand for snacking on!) and instead of going for a sweet flavor like I usually do, I grabbed a plethora of savory ingredients from the pantry and went to town.
The result? A cheesy, salty mixture of crunch and flavor! Have a look at the amazing ingredients and you’ll see why it turned out so EPIC!
Savory Southwestern Granola
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Cook Time: 13 mins
- Total Time: 18 mins
- Yield: 4 servings 1x
- Category: Savory Snacks
Ingredients
- 1 cup gluten-free quick oats
- 1 cup puffed rice cereal
- 2 tbsp buckwheat groats
- 2 tsp salt-free Taco Seasoning
- ¼ cup nutritional yeast
- ¼ cup mixed seeds (I used sunflower and pumpkin)
- 2 tbsp Simple Girl BBQ sauce
- 1 egg white
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350. Mix all dry ingredients together in a bowl. In a separate small bowl combine egg white and BBQ sauce. Pour egg mixture over dry ingredients and mix until everything is well coated. Spread granola mixture on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, stir, and then bake for 3 more minutes. Remove from oven and let cool to crisp up before serving.
High protein, gluten-free, and oil-free as well…this Savory Southwestern Granola is amazing for munching straight from the baking sheet or even pouring some unsweetened cashew milk over the top! (I swear it works!)
Loads of people are making savory oatmeal lately and I think this would make for a great topping option for one of those breakfast bowls.
Ever since making this, I feel like a whole world of granola flavor possibilities has opened for me! There are so many spice and herb combinations I want to experiment with. Would you guys be interested in more savory granola recipes? Let me know in the comments!
Anyways, I am LOVING this granola for snacks and topping things with. I think you’ll really enjoy it too and I am sure you’ll find some fun ways to use it just like I have.
Here’s to thinking outside of the box when it comes to traditional food items! 🙂
Do you tend to prefer sweet or savory flavors more?
Have you ever made savory granola before?
What’s your DREAM granola flavor?

I usually prefer sweet granolas, but I could imagine this being a really yummy topping for salads. A friend and I were talking a few days ago about how God had all these flavor profiles before eternity and He knew that we were going to figure them out. That’s so COOL, and I love how the discovery of God’s flavors and creation is just endless!
Thanks lovely!! Let me know if you try this!! It would be a GREAT topping for salad!!
