An easy tutorial on how to remove an image’s background on a Mac WITHOUT using Photoshop!
One of my favorite parts of blogging is the graphic making. I love making the graphics for my recipes, my roundups, and my product reviews.
I am not the best at graphic design but I’m slowly teaching myself new things and using Dr. Google wherever necessary to fill in the blanks. One thing that I feel like I’ll NEVER master completely is Photoshop. It’s just so complicated!
I’ve gotten a lot better at using it this past year and with my Digital Photography class this semester, but I think I’ll perpetually be learning new things about it. That’s fine with me…it’s pretty boring when we know everything and have nothing left to explore.
With that said, sometimes I want to do things quickly and easily without having to look things up online, bother my blogging buddies, or open Photoshop at all. This is especially the case for removing backgrounds from images.
For the life of me, I can never remember exactly how to do it in Photoshop and always end up having to watch YouTube videos every time I want to do it. It makes a something that should take minutes a long, drawn-out process.
Well luckily, I have FINALLY stumbled upon a photo editing hack! I’m so excited about it that I figured I’d share it with all of you in case you have a need to remove backgrounds from images regularly. I know this will especially come in handy for any of you bloggers out there!
What makes this editing hack so cool is that you DON’T need Photoshop! So whether you’re just not tech-savvy or haven’t shelled out the money for it, this trick is for you. (Unfortunately it only works on Mac computers as far as I know, but if any of you out there no how to do this on a PC definitely share your method!)
Without further ado, a step-by-step guide on How to Remove a Background from an Image WITHOUT Photoshop!
Open selected image from Google and drag to your desktop.
Double click the image to open it in Preview.
Go to View and click show markup toolbar if it is not already showing.
Select the “wand tool” (also called Instant Alpha). Your cursor will become a plus sign. Drag the plus sign cursor across the background. The area of the background you’re selecting will be highlighted in red. Drag until the desired amount of background is highlighted.
Release the cursor and dashed lines will show up around the background area you’ve selected. Now, click Delete. You will then be prompted to save the image as a .PNG. Select save.
Your image (sans background) will now be saved to your desktop where you initially dragged it. Note: if you open it, it won’t seem like the background is removed, but if you place it on a colored background you’ll be able to see the final result.
Easy as apple pie! 😉
Here are a few examples of graphics I’ve used this technique on…
