Taking on the ‘No Thank You’ writing prompt by sharing some things I could do without in the world and expressing gratitude for the things I’d like more of.
Recently as I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across a post by Lauren Fleshman (@fleshmanflyer). A friend of hers gave her a writing prompt that entailed saying ‘no thank you’ to the things in life that don’t serve you and that you don’t want detracting from the positive energy surrounding you. Lauren shared her own list.
While I don’t agree with everything she listed, obviously, because we are different people, her post inspired me to try this exercise for myself. So often we forgo our own needs and betray our own beliefs in an attempt to “people please” or say “yes” to others. Saying NO THANK YOU can be a great exercise in self-love, self-worth, and putting yourself FIRST. Here are a few of my No Thank Yous…
No thank you to anyone who can’t handle me being myself. No thank you to intolerance. No thank you to judging people for being different. No thank you to shaming others for their size or weight. No thank you to ridiculing others for their passions.
No thank you to comments on my body. No thank you to fat talk or body shaming. No thank you to negative self talk. No thank you to commiserating with other women over our flaws. No thank you to cutting other people’s flowers. No thank you to women who don’t support other women.
No thank you for inadequate mental health care and a f*cked up medical system. No thank you to physicians with no bedside matter and who don’t really care. No thank you mental health stigmas. No thank you to psychiatrists who push pills and spend less than 5 minutes with their patients. No thank you to being treated less than human for having an illness that is mental instead of physical. No thank you for being invalidated for my struggles. No thank you for being judged based on my past instead of acknowledged for what I am currently dealing with. No thank you to blaming people for illnesses that they can’t help.
No thank you for lack of communication. No thank you for holding in thoughts and feelings. No thank you for feeling guilty for being human. No thank you to not having discussions. No thank you to defensiveness and not being able to have a conversation like adults.
No thank you for blowing off important relationships. No thank you to friends who become the people they never said they would. No thank you for disrespect. No thank you for betrayal. No thank you for no closure.
No thank you to desktop dietitians with no real credentials. No thank you to demonizing carbs, sugar, fat, or any specific food/macronutrient. No thank you to trading eating disorders for yoga teaching, body building, or physique competitions. No thank you to reverse dieting instead of real weight gain and proper treatment.
No thank you to red meat. No thank you to alcohol. No thank you to people who judge other people’s food choices.
No thank you to slow walkers. No thank you for not staying to the right. No thank you for cat calls. No thank you for rude comments when I don’t acknowledge your advances.
No thank you to people who can’t laugh at themselves. No thank you to people who hate comedy. No thank you to people with no sense of humor. No thank you to people who mock others for having fun. No thank you to people who can’t lighten up. No thank you to people who take things too seriously.
No thank you to having it all figured out. No thank you to corporate jobs or working 9-5. No thank you to traditional constructs of family. No thank you to judging people for their politics or religion. No thank you to shunting creativity.
No thank you to people who cheat, lie, steal or purposely harm others. No thank you to people who yell at animals. No thank you to narcissists. No thank you to people who rise by lowering others. No thank you to not fixing each other’s crowns.
No thank you to texting instead of calling. No thank you to ignoring instead of dealing. No thank you to walking on eggshells. No thank you to holding grudges. No thank you beating around the bush.
No thank you to spending one more day, hour, minute, or second doing anything less than what feeds your soul. No thank you to putting passions on the back burner. No thank you to treating other people like sh*t from behind a computer screen.
But even with all these NO thank yous, there is still a lot for me to be THANKFUL for. So I decided to add on to this writing challenge by also sharing some of my gratitudes. One of my favorite movies is HappyThankYouMorePlease and one of my biggest take aways from it is that when we find things in the world that light us up, we have to consciously ask the universe for more of those things. When we like or enjoy something, it isn’t enough to say ‘thank you’. With gratitude the universe is eternally abundant and thus we should ask for ‘more please’. In essence, “Yes, thank you. More please.”

Thank you for adventures with my mom. Thank you for late night movie marathons with my dad. Thank you for my first niece and my wonderful sister. Thank you for family members who love me unconditionally. Thank you for snuggles from my animals.
Thank you for long walks with audiobooks. Thank you for absolutely perfect blue skies and blazing summer rays. Thank you for cold drinks, creamy ice cream, and perfectly grilled meals.
Thank you for books. Thank you for worlds created through words on a page. Thank you for an escape from the everyday with a turn of the page.
Thank you for my job. Thank you for my clients. Thank you for my ability to support myself and be independent. Thank you for being able to do what I love.
Thank you for dusk. Thank you for the feeling of sitting down for the first time all day. Thank you for a good night of sleep after hours of busyness.
Thank you for The Office. Thank you for Netflix. Thank you for broadway shows and musical theatre. Thank you for stand up comedians and podcasts.
Thank you for social media. Thank you for allowing me to connect with people similar to me all over the world. Thank you for allowing me to connect with people different from me all over the world.
Thank you for meeting up with old friends and meeting new ones. Thank you for the kindness of strangers. Thank you for a listening ear.
Thank you for a firm handshake. Thank you for good conversation. Thank you for belly laughs and wide smiles.
Thank you for swimming. Thank you for running. Thank you for hiking. Thank you for nature. Thank you for the wind blowing through my hair as I bike around my city.
Thank you for tattoos. Thank you for the written word. Thank you for multiple outlets for people to express themselves creatively.
Thank you for body positivity. Thank you for non-diet dietitians. Thank you for the women’s movement. Thank you for not accepting being second rate citizens.
Thank you for slowing down in a world that keeps speeding up. Thank you for remembering what really matters. Thank you for opportunity to make a difference.
Thank you for this one life to live.
