A short post on why Mental Health Days are so important and how I implement them in my own life.
Folks, I’d be lying if I said the last week has been easy. As you know, I’ve had one hell of a year so far in terms of medical issues (mental and physical), but during this past week everything has sort of come to a head. I sort of hit a mental breaking point, if that makes sense.
When my feelings and thoughts become that strong, I know it is time for what I like to call a Mental Health Day. No, not what your parents called a day in high school when you ditched class. I am talking a REAL Mental Health Day, where you prioritize your mental health and sort of press a reset button on your state of mind.
That’s why you’re not going to be getting a mid-week post from me this week (or well I guess this is sort of a post…more of a check-in?). It’s not for lack of content, ideas, or desire to share. I just know that right now, my mind does not need anymore chaos inside of it. I’ve had to take several Mental Health Days in the past week, and today is no different.
Here’s a little bit of what a Mental Health Day looks like for me…
+getting outside and out of the house for as much of the day as possible
+staying off my computer, phone, and social media as much as I can
+only doing the most important work tasks on my list and saving things of lesser priority for a time when I’m in a better state of mind
+drinking a ton of fluids (for some reason being really well hydrated makes me feel better in every way)
+blasting feel good music all day and singing along (I’ve been loving The Beatles, Why Don’t We, and Have a Good Day playlists on Spotify!)
+riding my bike by the water (something about being by the water calms me)
+going kayaking, if possible
+treating myself to something I love like a smoothie bowl or an iced coffee/tea
Nothing too crazy, but it all gives me a little “me time” and brightens my mood a bit.
I highly suggest that if you deal with anxiety or depression, that you take inventory (sort of like the list above) of things that make you happy and break you out of mental funks. It’s so convenient to have around and helps you more easily take a Mental Health Day when needed.
And believe me, we ALL need them from time to time.
