A helpful guide for those wanting to make their loved ones feel better or recovery quicker when they are sick or under the weather. Tips and tricks to help someone “get well soon”.
Even though the weather is finally improving around the country, a lot of people are still feeling under the weather. After being cooped up inside all winter with forced air vents, little sunshine, and less movement than normal, no one it feeling 100% themselves. Couple the unending winter with the start allergy season and you have a recipe for watery eyes, runny noses, and scratchy throats.
Take my dad for example, he suffers from allergies AND asthma, so these past few months have been particularly hard on him. He basically felt like he was perpetually sick all throughout the winter because of the circumstances. It was hard to see him suffer and not feel great for such a long period of time. I constantly wished there was something I could do to make him feel better and more comfortable.
Obviously this example hits close to home for me, but we all have had people in our lives that we care about that have been under the weather before. I’m sure you can relate to feeling pretty helpless in making their illness go away, but luckily there are a few things you can do to speed recovery and make them feel better throughout the process.
Today I’ve rounded up my go-to tips and tricks for helping someone “get well soon”. In my case, I came up with this list for my dad, but it’s applicable to any one in your life that you want to show how much you care. Obviously, these tips are not medical and may not actually heal the person’s sickness, but they certainly will brighten their spirits.
Use your words
No matter what situation someone is in, people love hearing that you love and care about them. It’s so comforting when people express sympathy and a willingness to make someone feel better. Even if you can’t do literal things to take away their sickness, knowing that you are there for them will cheer up their mood. Additionally, you can ask “how can I help?” or “what can I do for you during this time?” to ease some of their stress help them accomplish things they aren’t able to while ill.
Bring them some natural supplements
Unless you’re a medical professional you obviously can’t bring someone medication or some sort of cure-all for their ailment. However, there are a lot of natural supplements and remedies out on the market that can speed recovery and lessen people’s symptoms. Two of my favorites are zinc tablets, which can shorten the duration of a cold, and slippery elm, which can ease a painful cough.
Get them outside
As much as we all just want to lay in bed and hibernate while sick, getting outside in the fresh air and sunshine can do wonders for your mood and your immune system. Encourage your loved one to get outside for a little bit of time each day, even if it’s just to sit and soak up some Vitamin D from the sun.
Prepare the person’s comfort food
We all have our go-to comfort foods and no other time are they more desired than when we are sick. Ask your loved one which foods sound best to them while sick and offer to make them a meal or too. Not only will this comfort them as they are recovering, but it takes one more task of their to-do list while being ill. Not having to worry about what they are going to make to fuel themselves while not feeling well is another weight off their shoulders that you can help lift!
Diffuse Essential Oils
I love diffusing essential oils all year long…whether I am sick or not! But they are especially helpful and effective when one is feeling under the weather. Oils like eucalyptus, peppermint or lavender oil help freshen the house, clean the air, promote a healing atmosphere, and soothe clogged sinuses. Bring some essential oils to your loved one for them to enjoy while they are ill.
Suggest an Epsom Salt bath
Epsom Salt baths are not just for athletes or those with sore muscles! Epsom Salt baths can be incredibly healing for someone who is sick. Not only will the warm bath itself make you feel better, but also Epsom Salts reduce inflammation and draw toxins out of the body. If you tell your loved one to do one thing while ill, make it THIS.
Do something fun (yet relaxing!) with them
Being sick is the perfect time to do some activities that promote REST. Have a movie night with your loved one, start that new series you’ve been meaning to watch, or enjoy some tea together while reading some new books. Fun doesn’t have to mean exerting energy or wearing yourself down further. Quiet, calm, relaxing activities are perfect for someone who is not feeling well.
Make them a “get well soon” care package
Who doesn’t love getting a handmade care package?! Especially when sick. My staples for a “get well soon” care package include:
– a Get Well Soon card
– green tea
– honey packets
– anti-bacterial wipes
– vitamin C drink powder
