Before I get to the main point of today’s post I wanted to thank Jess for pointing out the mistake I made on yesterday’s post! I referred to the workout I posted as an incline walking workout but it was actually a treadmill speed interval workout….sorry for the confusion!
[here it is again incase you missed it!]
I do actually have an awesome incline walking workout to share with you all but I will save that to be a part of my WIAW post!

As I mentioned the other day, I read a really inspiring, incredibly well written post by Cheryl! It was perfect for her blog because it talked about defining happiness vs. healthiness (her blog name is Happy is the New Healthy!). After providing her own definitions she encouraged others to define those two words for themselves in their own lives….I am always up for a challenge!
But to tell you the truth, it wasn’t to hard to differentiate between these two states of being. To me, being healthy is doing what feels right for you, doing what you love, being confident in your life decisions, and making choices that allow you to live YOUR life to its fullest capacity. In essence, doing what makes you happy means you’re leading a healthy lifestyle.
Sure the typical images that come to mind when you think of the word healthy are fit people in the gym, lots of vegetables, and those ever important 8 glasses of daily water…but in reality, HEALTH is so much more than that. It’s unique to every person!
Now you may be thinking that “Oh I can’t be healthy and happy at the same time!”. But that’s not the case…you have to find a happy medium between the two and find things that fit into both categories for your lifestyle. For example, maybe you feel like you HATE exercise and love eating junk food…maybe you think those things will make you happy. But if you consider the long term effects of those habits you’ll realize that your life could be hindered negatively by those choices and thus effect your happiness. Instead, you could try and find some form of movement or activity that you really enjoy and indulge in your favorite foods in moderation. Not only would you be leading a balanced lifestyle free of extremes/all or nothing mentalities, but you would be maintaining your health while still remaining happy and content.
For some of us out there, healthy living is what makes us happy! I am one of those people for sure. Being happy for me is being well in my mind and body. By taking care of my mind and body I am able to experience the world around me and live the crap out of each day (excuse my choice of words!). I want to maximize my life…get everything out of it that I can. Being happy and healthy are one in the same for me. I can’t have one without the other.
And today’s July Blogging Challenge prompt, goes hand in hand with keeping in mind health and happiness…
Day 8– How do you envision your life in 5 years?
In a perfect world, I would be a college graduate living in a big city with a career that encompasses all my passions and interests. But seeing as I don’t exactly know the direction I want to go in yet, I would take being happy, healthy, self sufficient, and an influential member in whatever community I find myself in. Whether I am working in some governmental position in DC, a leader for an outdoor adventure camp, a correspondent abroad for a national news network, a lobbyist for better food standards in the FDA, a lawyer, a chef, a writer…whatever! As long as I am pursuing my passions and love what I am doing.
To give you a little break from this wall o’ text…here are some pics from the cemetery tour I took over the weekend! This cemetery is right down the street from my house and although I go there for runs and rides all the time, it was cool to take sometime to look at some of the more famous plots and sites!
We saw Millard Fillmore’s grave as well as some of the OLDEST tombs in the cemetery! My inner history buff was intrigued

What does being happy and being healthy mean to you?
Do you find cemeteries cool or creepy?

This is such a beautifully written post and I love your outlook on healthy vs. happy. I couldn’t agree more. Happiness and health go hand-in-hand. Personally, my happiness comes from mental AND physical health. So taking care of both of those things is crucial. (:
You can totally accomplish all of the things you listed in your 5-year plan! I truly believe that we can do anything we set our minds to and you’re SO talented and hard-working, I know you’ll get there!
Thank you so much Emily! I hope I can accomplish all I want to do…it would be so amazing!
A) Thank you for the shout out and
B) I love this post.
I think you have such a fresh and genuinely healthy take on this. I really really enjoyed reading this. 🙂 So glad you did your homework.
And props to you for think about that five year plan. The first step is writing it down and just thinking about it. “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” 🙂
I loved YOUR post! Thank you so much for the inspiration to write my own!
No wonder I have been MIA! I didn’t subscribe to the new blog. So glad I figured that out 🙂
I find cemeteries both creepy and cool. I used to be so freaked out by them but since I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten better 🙂
Happy you’re subscribing again! Missed your comments 🙂
I love this post, I saw her post as well and can’t wait to do a reflection of my own for it when I return from business. You have such a great approach to it and I love that. I think it is sad when people forget you can be both, there is always a balance that can be found it is all about being patient and allowing yourself to find it naturally. eAsier said than done of course.
Thank you alex! I can’t wait to read your post on this topic!
No worries! From a selfish perspective I wanted to be clear about the nature of the treadmill workout because I rate the ones you post so highly. They’re the only blogger workouts that challenge me to the max.
Cemetaries…hmm, I don’t have strong feelings one way or the other. I always feel pretty self-conscious in them, and I would never want to do anything to disrespect the dead. I guess I find them cool, but I wouldn’t want to spend the night in one!
Interesting debate going on with the happy vs.healthy thing. To be honest I don’t buy most of the slightly forced positivity on some blogs, but on yours it seems genuine and sincere, so I’m always happy to hear your thoughts on these ‘deeper’ matters 🙂

Thank you so much Jess! Your comments are always so thoughtful as well as insightful! And I am totally with you on not wanting to spend a night in a cemetery! Waaaay to creepy.
