An inside look into what I am bringing with me to fuel my mountaineering trek in Patagonia! Healthy, portable food that will provide all the nutrients I need to stay energized while climbing and hiking all day.
I haven’t said too much about it over the past few months…for fear of jinxing myself and my trip (lord knows I lost a TON of money last year planning events and trips only to STILL be injured when the time came around!)….but this weekend I am leaving for a 8-day trekking adventure in Patagonia!
If you don’t know where Patagonia is, it’s a small region in South America that’s part of both Chili AND Argentina. I’ll be flying into Buenos Aires and then busing to a small village to meet my group and start our ascent of two mountains there.
I CANNOT wait to recap all my experiences there once I get back, but for now I thought it would be fun to share some of the food I’m taking along with me to FUEL my hiking and climbing. A lot of you who knew about this trip previously asked me about it as well, so it only seemed fitting to give you some details on that.
When I first booked this trip, the number one thing I started thinking about was how I was going to buy all of the gear I needed, and number two was figuring out what food to bring with me. There’s 6 days of trekking in total, so realistically that’s 18 meals and some snacks to account for.
I did my research and started gathering a bunch of nourishing foods to bring with me.
Things to Consider
A few criteria I considered when picking my “fuel”:
- easy to pack
- easy to eat on-the-go
- have simple, whole food ingredients
- have fiber
- be nutrient dense
Without much fresh food available on the mountains, I wanted to make sure I was at least getting some forms of fruits and veggies during the trip. Without them, I can imagine my digestion and (TMI) regularity would be a disaster. It would be SUPER uncomfortable to be hiking and climbing all day while experiencing…stomach issues. ?
So, while this list of products is not exhaustive (I’m sure I’ll throw in a few last-minute things!), here is a the majority of what I am bringing along with me!
Fuel for Mountain Climbing
Single Serve Protein Powder Packets (Amazing Grass, Garden of Life, VEGA, etc.)
There will be hot water, tea, coffee, and a few small food items available to us from the mountaineering group but other than that, the foods above are what I’ll be using to stay strong and energized! ? I can’t even imagine how good a fresh, warm meal will taste when I get home. ?
This will be my last post for about a week and a half since there is no WiFi or any access to technology while I am climbing! I am actually TOTALLY looking forward to disconnecting. This past week or two tying up loose ends and trying to get work done ahead of time for my clients has been non-stop, crazy busy. So a week and some change off is going to feel GREAT.
If you have any questions about my trip (or my other backpacking trip in June in Spain!) please leave them in the comments below.
When I get back, I plan on recapping this amazing adventure and also sharing how I am (FINALLY) on the mend and getting ready to return to running. It’s been a long journey (over a year now), but the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be in sight. ?
