I’ve stumbled upon some really uplifting, inspiring, and insightful corners of the web recently. I thought I’d share my recent discoveries with all of you so you don’t have to go as long as I did without being aware of these awesome people!
Today I am sharing five websites (and the people behind them!) that work to help others reach optimal mental and physical well being.
Kelly is a certified Holistic Nutritionist and she works to help others fix and strengthen their relationship with food. Coming from an eating disorder background, she has a lot of insight into what it feels like to live in fear of food. But her site is really for ANYONE. She offers great advice on body image, honoring ones cravings, and approaching life in a healthy, balanced way. Kelly also shares fun recipes, tips on how to help others who may be experiencing food issues, and a lot of personal anecdotes about her own history. Kelly’s openness and honesty is admirable and help you feel so much better about wherever you are in your own relationship with health, fitness, and nutrition.
A recent discovery for me, I found Madelyn’s site through her podcast (of the same name…which I’ve been listening to non-stop!). The guests she has on her show are some of the most motivational people I’ve ever heard from and Madelyn herself is so incredible. She strives to help others find peace with their bodies, stop stressing about food and exercise, and live outside of achieving a certain physical aesthetic. As a former figure competitor, she knows what she’s talking about. Nowadays, she preaches food freedom and body respect. But what I love most is that Madelyn herself is still discovering what works best for her. So you feel like you can relate and that you’re on the journey with her. It’s good to know that it’s okay to not have everything figured out, but that if you’re constantly working towards self discovery then you’re on the right path.
I followed Kaila’s blog on and off over the past couple years. I have to admit I was initially drawn to it because of how similar our names are….Kaila (same first name) and PRins (same first two letters of our last name!). But her site is so much more than that. Not only did it introduce to her podcast, Finding Our Hunger, which is incredible, but also Kaila touches upon such important topics ranging from diets and exercise addiction to body image and disordered eating. Her writing is so eloquent and Kaila is so open and honest about the journey she’s been on. Truly inspiring and a great resource for ANYONE who doesn’t always feel comfortable in their own skin.
Don’t worry, it’s not as hard-core as it sounds. 😉 Written by Caroline Haagen, The F*ck It Diet is a manifesto in website form. It’s all about getting people away from the diet mentality and ending the fixation that our nation has on food and weight. The mission straight from the site:
“Our mission is to create a culture where food is neutral, size is neutral, and where women (and men) are inherently powerful, and represented diversely in the media and everyday life. Where people being confident and happy is the norm. But this has to start with you first.”
YES. Caroline is not a proponent of a certain food philosophy or of intuitive eating. Her method is radically more simple…JUST EAT. She helps people heal their relationship with food and I LOVE receiving her weekly emails. Not only is she hilarious and relatable, but also her insights on the diet culture are so on point. Such good reminders to get in your inbox.
Matt Stone is a metabolism EXPERT and I love his outlook on diet and exercise. He is a big advocate of having carbohydrates in your diet, NOT restricting calories, and not over stressing your body through intense exercise. Basically, he’s got it going on! He recommends eating more and exercising less to heal metabolism problems (which most of us have believe it or not!). Matt has written several E-books as well that outline his ideas. Diet Recovery: Restoring Hormonal Health, Metabolism, Mood, and Your Relationship with Food is the latest one. Metabolism is a great indicator of overall health and functionality, so Matt puts emphasis primarily on that. With a rise in metabolism you see increased rate of wound healing, increased immunity, mood enhancement, stronger gastric secretions and better digestion, improved glucose metabolism, higher levels of sex hormones for better fertility, menstruation, sex drive, muscle-building, and dozens of other beneficial changes. I love reading his blog posts and listening to him when he makes the rounds on different health and fitness podcasts.
