Strategies for easing an anxious mind when you are stressed or overwhelmed. A round-up of positive coping skills to turn to when your brain won’t shut off!
We all have a hard time shutting off our brains on occasion. Racing thoughts. Worry about what was or what will be.
It takes from practice to be able to quiet our minds, but with a set of positive coping strategies and tips, it can be done.
Today I am sharing some of my go to methods for to ease your mind, calming yourself, and getting through challenging bouts of anxiety. Hopefully they will help some of you the next time you’re dealing with a wave of anxiety.
Tips for Easing an Anxious Mind
Turn on a sound machine and focus in on the noise
My favorite to listen to is the ‘rain’ setting….it totally mellows me.
Get outside and go for a walk
It’s amazing what a little fresh air and movement can do for your mind!
Paint your nails
And if you’re a guy, do something else with your hands! Doing something with my hands that takes precision and focus completely distracts my mind and allows me to just zero in on the task at hand (no pun intended).
Deep breathe and sigh out loud
This is SO underrated but inhaling loudly and exhaling powerfully really relieves some of that tension you may be feeling.
Text or call a loved one
Get lost in the internet for a bit
Yes, the internet can be a time suck, but it can also be a great momentary distraction and tool for relaxation if you use it in moderation to step away from your stressors.
Write it out or say it out loud
Sometimes just physically getting the thoughts out of your head and into the open can keep you from dwelling on them.
Plug in a podcast or your favorite music
Nothing like some noise going straight to your brain to drown out your own thoughts.
Best done when no one else is home…literally scream at the top of your lungs, with no restrictions and no holding back….trust me, it feels damn good.
Stretch it out
Holding stretches that are a little uncomfortable gives me a physical sensation that gives my mind something to focus on other than its own thoughts….a little pain/uncomfortableness can be good sometimes!
Refer to some of your favorite words of wisdom or mantras
Being reminded of things that you know to be true about yourself and the world can be very centering and bring you back to state of calm and serenity.
I subscribe to two email services that always bring a little positivity and light into my day. TUT gives you a daily dose of inspiration and encouragement, while the Daily Positive sends a new post everyday that gives you something to positive to think about the world, life, and society in general. Both are incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking. They definitely can set your mind straight when you’re worrying about things that really don’t matter.
These are just a few of the tricks I use and I hope they can help some of you out there.
