With the holiday season almost at its end, it seems like everyone is already jumping right ahead to 2018. I, for one, wish things would slow down a bit and am hanging on to the end of this year for as long as I can. Sure, I like the new start that comes with the new year…but what I am not a fan of is all the diet and weight-loss talk that comes as soon as January 1st hits.
It’s like a switch flips in people’s heads. We go from celebrating the important things in life: friends, family, making memories together; to obsessing over frivolous aesthetics like the size of our waists and hips. Everyone begins to speak of ‘getting back on track’, ‘toning up’, and ‘slimming down’…as if the holidays were not a wonderful time of the year and instead were just an obstacle in the way of their diet goals. Oh how quickly we forget the magic of the season…
But what if we didn’t feel the need to ‘get back on track’ because we never fell ‘off track’ to begin with? Let me explain.
When I chat with personal training clients who are trying to lose weight (or at least not get out of control) before/during/after the holidays, the biggest issue they complain about is having cravings and then going overboard on their favorite foods after they’ve restricted themselves for long periods of time. This is where a cycle of restriction and binging begins….and it can be a hard pattern to break (coming from personal experience).
My solution? Don’t follow the diet advertisement and magazine inserts that are telling you to CRUSH your cravings! Instead…try satisfying them. Genius, right?
It’s much better to give yourself the tastes and foods you’re craving rather than holding out until you can’t resist anymore and then end up going overboard anyways. By restricting yourself to begin with you’re setting yourself up for failure in the end.
Set your self up for success by having snacks on hand that taste amazing, satisfy your cravings for sweet (or salty!) foods, and are high in protein so that they keep you full. I love having ZONEPerfect Nutrition Bars on hand when my cravings strike…particularly the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor.
Let’s be real, not a day goes by where I don’t crave some sort of chocolatey peanut butter dessert. Since I don’t have a 24/7 bakery in my apartment, Chocolate Peanut Butter ZONEPerfect Nutrition Bars do the trick! They’re “great taste guaranteed”, have 19 vitamins & minerals per bar, and use no artificial flavors or sweeteners.
As I was enjoying one the bars the other day, I was inspired to make an even more EPIC sweet and salty snack using them!
Like I said above, don’t try to ignore your cravings! SATISFY THEM. Even better? Do it with healthier versions of your favorite treats. My Chocolate Peanut Butter Trail Mix Bark is high protein, gluten-free, and SO easy to make.
