The BIGGEST NEWS of 2017 so far!
Ever since I ran my first marathon last year, I had the dream of running Boston in 2017. I knew qualifying would be tough, but I was even more afraid that the race would fill up before I had my chance to run. It did.
I was told I’d have to wait until 2018 to run. That seemed like forever to realize my dream of running the Boston Marathon. Once I get something in my head, it’s hard for me to let it go and that’s how I felt about this race. So much so that something in me still held out hope that a miracle would happen.
Well friends, it did. I AM RUNNING BOSTON 2017 thanks to the amazing people with Team 261 Fearless!!!! I found out after a whirlwind two days of applications and interviews yesterday. This truly IS my dream come true. I am honored to be one of their charity runners and can’t wait to help spread their important message. But I need YOUR help. Now more than ever.
Have you heard of Team 261 Fearless? I hadn’t before I got the opportunity to apply for this final spot on their team and I am KICKING myself in the pants for not being aware of them sooner. I HAVE to tell you more about them and all the incredible work they are doing for women around the world.
Here’s a little background information…
The Story Behind 261
The story behind the number 261 is that it was Kathrine’s bib number from the 1967 Boston Marathon where she had to protected that bib while an angry race director attacked her in the second mile. He tried to rip the numbers off her shirt, infuriated that a woman had entered his race. He tried to declare it as a men’s only event.
Terrified and humiliated, Kathrine got away from the official, thanks to help from her fellow teammates. She went on to finish the race and vowed she finish it on her hands and knees if she had to. The bib numbers 261 stayed proudly on her front and back the whole time!
Katherine has since run 39 marathons and won the NYC Marathon in 1974. She accomplished her personal best in 1975, finishing second in Boston (2:51:33). Following her running triumphs, she went on to create the Avon International Running Circuit of women’s only races in 27 countries with over a million participating from 1978 to the present time. This series of events that showed global participation and performances that was the key contributor to the IOC’s inclusion of a women’s marathon in the 1984 Olympic Games.
Pretty incredible, right?

Women’s empowerment through running?! That is pretty much everything I believe! Running has been my biggest source of empowerment in life and I have a passion for helping others experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from the sport too. How perfect it is that there is an organization already facilitating this worldwide!
How can YOU help?
This year is a special year. It’s the 50th anniversary of Katherine’s first running of the Boston Marathon in which she was almost (literally) thrown off the course. My fellow teammates and I want to commemorate this in a BIG way. Between now and April 17th, I need to raise 10,500 dollars in order to run the race and keep up my commitment to the rest of the team. It’s a big challenge, but I’ve overcome so much and I am passionate about this cause. I KNOW I can rely on all of you to support me in this venture!
My donation page is set up through Crowdrise. All you have to do is click the link and donate as much as you want to this movement for women’s empowerment worldwide. All money goes towards funding the Team 261 Fearless programs around the world and ANY donation (no matter how small or large!) helps a ton.
Additionally sharing this post and this amazing story helps a great deal too! Please share this post, tweet, and repost on Facebook to get the word out about my venture to raise a large sum of money for a cause that means so much to me…and my fellow women!
Can you think of a more timely period in our history to be focused on women’s equality and empowerment? I truly cannot. The time is NOW, friends. Let’s make this happen! I know we can do it.
It only seems right to end this post with a little mood music. 😉
