Well the time is here friends! I am finally starting grad school! My classes officially start the day I am publishing this post actually, so wish me luck with my new studies in the field of Health Communications. My program is online luckily which is great for my lifestyle currently because it allows me to work from anywhere and still maintain my work schedule rather flexibly.
I have a little bit of nerves going into this spring semester. I’ve technically been ‘out of school’ since last May when I graduated so I feel like I am a little out of the academic groove. Thinking about classes, having schoolwork and deadlines again, being tied to someone else’s schedule…it’s all pretty overwhelming. One thing helping ease my anxiety however is the fact that I KNOW I’m not alone. There are millions of other people going back to school for the spring semester and I’m sure they’re having a lot of the same thoughts as me.
That’s why I thought it would be a good idea to a compile a list of the strategies I use when nerves about school come up. And we all know they don’t just go away on day one either! Get your textbooks, supplies, and dorm room necessities before the semester begins. You don’t want to be scrambling last-minute to get things shipped or picked up at the store when you should be focusing on getting in the right mindset for classes. Print out syllabuses from your classes if they’re available online, do a walk-thru of your route from class to class, and figure out your work/study schedule all before the first day. This will keep you from panicking when the semester starts and being out of sorts in this hectic transitional period.

College is extremely overwhelming at times, especially when you’ve got deadlines coming up for all of your classes! For me, the best thing I can do to stay sane is to stay ORGANIZED. I do this by keeping a planner close by and by having a big wall calendar above my desk so I can see direct visuals of when things are due. This way important dates are always right in front of me. My planner and calendar act as great reminder so I don’t forget anything important.
The best part about having your books and reading materials long before the semester starts is that you can get a head start on reading for the first few weeks of classes. There’s nothing better than walking in on the first day and already being ahead of the game in terms of your assignments. Most professors post the syllabus and first few reading assignments prior to the first day anyways, so it doesn’t hurt to check online or even email them directly to find out what they are. The professors will love your studious, conscientious approach and you’ll save yourself the stress of getting behind on work once the semester begins for real.
You probably spent your first semester getting the ropes of school and acclimated to being back in the classroom again. Use the second semester to get more involved on campus! Your studies are important but they aren’t everything. Join a new club, hang out with a different friend group, and put yourself out there in ways you haven’t done before! Your mind and body will thank you for the time spent away from the books and it will allow you to get a better sense of that full college experience.
Goal setting is important in ANY facet of life, but especially while in college. Whether it’s to be more organized, to manage your time better, or to ace your first long paper assignment, setting goals throughout the semester can keep you from getting distracted and give you things to always be working towards. It can be hard to see the light at the end of long semester, but setting short-term and long-term goals can break it up into manageable sections that make it seem like time is going faster than it is. Before you know it, you’ll have accomplished the goals you’ve set for yourself AND be done with the semester.
Establish Healthy Habits
From Day 1, create a healthy routine for yourself full of conscientious, wellness minded practices that will keep your mind and body happy throughout the semester. This means going to bed early/getting enough sleep in general, keeping partying/drinking to a minimum, drinking and eating enough throughout the day, staying on top of your schoolwork deadlines, staying in touch with loved ones, and fitting in some movement…to name a few things! Building healthy habits from the get go sets you up for a semester of success and prosperity. The more routine and structured you get with your days the easier it will be to stay on track, keep focused, and make these healthy habits stick for the long-term.

To do lists are your friends. Make a list of daily tasks you need to complete and check em’ off as you go. Set alarms on your phone for events/meetings/deadlines so you won’t miss them. Also, prepare everything you need (assignments, food, outfit, etc.) the night before so you can maximize on sleep, because waking up to go to class when it’s still dark outside is already hard enough as it is. | Farrah
My favorite tip from when I was in college was to schedule a ‘me day’ into your calendar. I’d commit to one day per week whether it was a week day or weekend to just relax and reenergize. I wouldn’t make or commit to any plans and always felt so refreshed after that day. | Leah
