Four easy ways to give back in your local community that you may have never thought of before! Unique ways to volunteer, donate, and positively contribute to those around you.
This post is sponsored by General Mills. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ve loved volunteering and giving back to my local community since I was little.
Whether it was doing neighborhood clean ups with my mom when I was in elementary school or volunteering at a local refugee organization in college…there’s nothing better than easing the burden of others and making your community a better place to live.
If you’ve been wanting to give back in your local community but don’t know where to start, I’ve got you covered. I’m sharing 4 EASY (and lesser known!) ways volunteer your time and help those in need right in your own backyard.
Become a Dog Walker
My local animal shelter is ALWAYS looking for people to come volunteer to walk and sometimes RUN with the dogs during lunchtime hours during the day. The super high energy dogs are paired with people who like to run on their lunch breaks, so it’s a win-win for both parties to get some fresh air and exercise.
Stock the Pantry
Local food banks are ALWAYS in need of supplies. One of my favorite things to do on a quarterly basis is to clean out my pantry and donate any canned or shelf-stable products that I haven’t ended up using. My rule is if I haven’t used it within 2-3 months of buying it, then it is much better off going to someone in need. You can also apply this logic to clothing if you feel like donating clothes to your local City Mission or Goodwill.
One thing I love in city is that my local co-op has huge bins out for the donations for the Food Bank of WNY all year round. It makes it SO easy to donate and sometimes I even just buy a few extra items when I am shopping to put in the bins.
Don’t Run a Race
Volunteer at one! If you’re an avid runner or just are looking for a new way to give back in your community, volunteering at a local race is a great way to help out. Most locals 5ks are for some sort of charity or cause anyway, so even if you’re not registered to run the race, you can offer to hand out water, direct runners on the course, set up/clean up, handout medals, and so many other things that are needed on race day. Running the race helps too if it’s for a local charity or foundation!
Buy Your Favorite Snacks
Have you heard of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals? Chances are you have one in your city or close by! My local CMN Hospital is Oshei Children’s Hospital. General Mills and Costco have recently partnered up During the month of May I can simultaneously stock up on my kids favorite General Mills cereals while supporting the Children’s Miracle Network. Giving back is important to me, so being able to buy a product I already love while also helping others is a cause I wholeheartedly support. I always go for these Nature Valley Almond Butter Biscuits! Every box features a unique story of a child that’s received care in a CMN hospital which is very heartwarming as well.
If you didn’t know, I got my dog, Ella, certified as a therapy dog a few years back and one of my favorite things to do with her is to go to local nursing homes and hospitals to cheer up the residents or patients. She’s a hit at my local Children’s hospital because she is SO good with kids and is an absolute lover. But like I mentioned above, dog or no dog, the EASIEST way you can support CMN Hospitals is by going to the closest Costco and buying specially marked General Mills products whose proceeds go towards helping those in need.
