3 nutrient dense smoothie recipes that will make you excited to wake up and start your day the HEALTHY way!
Smoothies have been getting a bad rap lately.
I am seeing more and more articles saying that smoothies “false” health foods and that they are the causing you to “gain weight”. Yet ANOTHER perfectly fine food being demonized by the diet industry.
Here’s the thing…
ANY food can be better or worse for you depending on how you prepare it. For example, white potatoes are totally healthy. They are full of potassium and filling resistant starch. But when they’re drenched in oil and fried to an unrecognizable crisp, then their nutrient value decreases. This doesn’t mean potatoes themselves aren’t healthy…it just means some ways of preparing them are “healthier” than others.
This is the same logic that goes into preparing a smoothie. Some people thing smoothies are just blended frozen drinks. So to them that might mean throwing some vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt in with their fruit and milk. But alas…that’s more of a milkshake than a smoothie. Fruit doesn’t make the smoothie…all the other nutritious ingredients do.
So yes…smoothies can be full of sugar and carbs, but if you make a concerted effort to combine a variety of nutrient dense foods in your blender, you’ll end up with a smoothie that’s not only delicious, but nourishing as well.
I’m here in defense of smoothies! I’m sick of more foods being added to the “don’t eat” list that society has going. ALL FOOD FITS, people…and smoothies should be the LEAST of your worries if you’re trying to remove unhealthy foods from your diet. In fact, smoothies can be a great way to get a bunch of healthy foods into one easy consume drink!
Today I am sharing 3 of my favorite recent smoothie combinations. One green, one chocolate-y, and one tropical! Something for everyone and all full of whole foods.

Notes for all recipes:
- If you’re not using frozen fruit you’ll need to add ice.
- All milks can be subbed for water, but the smoothies will not be as thick and creamy.
- You may need to add more liquid depending on the strength of your blender.
All of these also make GREAT smoothie bowl bases if you feel like “eating” your smoothie instead of drinking it! 😋
