Ten all natural ways to relieve pain without having to reach for medication or resort to drastic measures! Your go-to guide for reducing or eliminating pain wherever it may arise in your body. Easy, simple, effective ideas that you can implement TODAY.
If you read THIS post, you know I’m in quite a bit of pain right now. That’s what comes with injuries, but it doesn’t mean you have to succumb to it and let it control your life. Another thing? You don’t have to go crazy with using pain medication or prescription drugs to quiet it. It’s not advisable to use those types of drugs long-term and since my injuries are ones that take a long time to heal I wanted to look into some other means to help me relieve my discomfort. It’s always good to have some other options in your back pocket to go to when you’re having an especially painful day.
Today I’m sharing 10 NATURAL Ways to Relieve Pain! Whether it’s back or neck pain, an injury like mine, or chronic pain from an autoimmune disease…this roundup has something for everything and will definitely give you some good resources next time you’re experiencing some type of pain in your day-to-day life.
Massages not only feel great, but they also boost levels of endorphins and serotonin in the body…AKA your body’s natural pain killers and mood boosters. Getting a massage also reduces stress hormone levels and has been shown to reduce the effect of genes that produce inflammatory responses in the body.
Biofreeze® Pain Reliever
Contrary to what you may think, Biofreeze® Pain Relief products are non-systemic, non-narcotic, and contain NO NSAIDs. They’re available without a prescription and contain USP grade menthol to provide fast-acting pain relief when applied on your body. I personally love using Biofreeze® on my hip area because it immediately quiets the soreness and ache I am currently experiencing in that area. To me, it’s affective as ice for reducing my pain and much more convenient since I don’t have an ice maker at home. You can find Biofreeze® Pain Relief products near you by using this link!
Yoga or Light Exercise
Mind-body practices, like yoga, promotes stress reduction, relaxation of muscles, and discipline (mentally and physically). All of these benefits have been shown to reduce pain, especially in the low-back and neck, and also enhance your stress-coping mechanisms.
Acupuncture treatment promotes the correction of energy imbalances in the body which can be a prevalent source of pain for some people. The careful placement of small needles in specific areas on the body affects the activity of a hormone called adenosine. Adenosine becomes active when someone experiences an injury and helps ease pain. Acupuncture enhances the effects of adenosine and also improves the functioning of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
More excuses to sleep in?! YES PLEASE! Not only does sleep benefit your mood and memory, but also it decreases the body’s sensitivity to pain. People who sleep only two extra hours per day are more tolerant and less affected by pain than those who don’t sleep as long.
Definitely check with your doctor when it comes to using heat versus cold therapy on an injury because depending on the type of injury, one can be better than the other. With that said, heat therapy can be VERY effective for pain relief. Heat therapy increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to an injured or pained area and also suppresses the body’s pain signals.
Meditation is great for people suffering from chronic pain! Being able to clear your mind and focus on breath is key for symptom management. Beginning a daily meditation practice serves as an excellent distraction from pain and helps relax the entire body and mind.
Inflammation in the body increases pain. So incorporating herbal remedies, like turmeric (I take a 1/2 tsp everyday!), ground ginger, or an omega-3 fish oil supplement, that reduce inflammation can in turn reduce pain. Turmeric is especially potent for pain reduction and works as a “natural ibuprofen” in the body.
Not only does laughing make you feel good mentally, it can make you FEEL GOOD physically. It’s an instant mood-booster and stress-reliever. Laughing acts as natural pain relief because it releases a rush of endorphins in the body. Just like during a massage, endorphins act as natural pain killers!
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
A mental health therapy for physical pain? YES! Actually talking out and about the source of your pain can help you reframe the way you think about it. Negatively thinking about pain contributes to it and makes it worse. Talking about your pain symptoms helps reduce stress around them and is especially effective for people with chronic pain who regularly experience symptom flare ups.
As I’m writing this, I happen to be having one of my less painful days than others. But when I do have rough day in terms of pain, I think it’s time to listen to my own advice and implement some of these strategies! No NSAIDs for me. I like to go the natural route when it comes to pain relief and I think you’ll find it works well for you too!
